Act
The stolen generation was a dark period of time for Australia, caused by the stubborn-minded British migrants and their desire for a ‘White Australia’. Despite the fact that the British born Australians believed that they were helping the Aboriginal population by adopting and assimilating them into the ‘superior’ British culture. By doing this, thousands of Aboriginal children and parents were disconnected from their families, losing their culture, language, and sense of identity. Most of them felt as though they didn’t belong to either world. As a person with a fairly large family, I could hardly imagine how absolutely devastating myself and my parents would be should my brothers or I be taken away. Being merged into a whole different culture with a new language, alone, it would be so hard to keep faith and be happy. Most of the Aboriginal children who found their families as adults, years after the legislation had been abolished suffered through not being able to connect with their families due to the culture, language and way of life having been so different. This is a trauma that no person should ever have to deal with; having no family often for the rest of their lives.
